Three hardcore NDFB(S) militants killed in encounter with security forces in Assam

Three hardcore militants of the banned NDFB (S) were killed in an encounter with a joint team of the Army and Assam Police on Sunday morning in the Kokrajhar district of Assam. Two of them have been identified as Rahul Basumatari and Ritu Basumatari. Weapons, ammunition and explosives were seized from the spot where the encounter occurred.   "Based on specific intelligence, the Army launched a series of joint operations with Assam Pollice in Kokrajhar early on Sunday.    During one such operation, the troops noticed suspected persons moving through dense forest. On being challenged, the suspects opened indiscriminate fire on the troops. The Army team retaliated with controlled fire and in the ensuing fire fight, three top militants of the outlawed National Democratic Front of Bodoland (Songbijit) were killed. The identity of the third militant is yet to be ascertained," Lt Col Suneet Newton, PRO, Army, said from Guwahati.   Among the items seized were four pistols, a large quantity of ammunition, hand grenades and other war like stores.   According to the Army, neutralisation of the three militants has come as a major setback for the group, as it is already reeling under the pressure of relentless CI/CT operations launched by the Army in conjunction with other security forces. The surgical operation carried out under the prevailing torrential rains, in thick foliage and under growth of the Assam forests has been commended by all concerned.
