Introduction

India’s Internal Security – a Challenge
India stands in one of the most unenviable situations of the world for being geographically located right next to a volatile Pakistan as also being besieged by a plethora of disruptive organizations from within, all of which together make India’s internal security as formidable a challenge as its external security paradigm is. Recent revelations by India’s Home Ministry vindicate that there is a subtle shift happening in the modus operandi of the Maoists. Much of their efforts in the future would be directed towards inflicting damage to India’s critical infrastructures which would invariably have strong ripple effects on India’s core strength, i.e. its economy. Such attacks on critical infrastructures would only mean attacks on Indian cities (and industrial townships) which have already proved to be extremely vulnerable, given the systemic and serial occurrences of terror attacks on them, for more than a decade now.

Way forward

For India as a whole and for India’s cities in particular to feel safe, apart from preemptive actions, the preventive mechanism of cities would have to be taken to an altogether new level. Such preventive mechanisms are not just about raising special forces or installation of CCTV cameras only but also about development and institutionalization of a Standard Operation Procedure for every concerned stakeholder, be it the police, the local administration, the hospitals, the emergency response teams, the corporates, the transport department, in case of any eventuality of a 26/11 type terror attack.

In this constantly changing environment, security has to evolve as a service and a shared responsibility for all. It can no longer be an exclusive burden of the government. And corporate India cannot afford to be a mere spectator or an outsider. Today, while the economy is nudging ahead at a rapid pace on its own momentum in spite of global and domestic problems, the real challenge is not just about developing it further but also to protect what has been build with much effort and pain. For India’s vibrant economic future to become more secure, the stakeholders of India’s economy would also have to be stakeholders in securing it too.
